The John Wesley AME Zion Church in Uniontown holds a powerful legacy—not only through its ties to the Underground Railroad as part of the African Methodist Episcopal Zion denomination, but also through its connection to the Civil Rights Movement. Established in the 1850s, the church has long been a cornerstone of the local Black community, with the current building dating to 1913. It was once led by Rev. James Lawson Sr., father of Rev. James Lawson Jr., a key architect of nonviolent resistance and mentor to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.—a link that highlights the church’s deep and often underrecognized influence on national social justice history.
